Welcome to my new blog!
In 2014 and 2015, I wrote and published a blog called bcc: the insider’s guide to nonprofit cultural enterprise and engagement. I discussed a myriad of topics, from the art of leadership and management to organizational resilience, gratitude, and improvisation; from lifelong learning and the benefits of failure to audience engagement and workplace placemaking; from the art of persuasion to design thinking in three parts; and, of course, the art of fundraising. I even shared some recipes from my fruitful exploits in gluten free baking. You can still access a few of these prior musings here.
Now older, wiser, and shaped by the past decade that has seen a worldwide pandemic, civil unrest, political instability, and war while I’ve been working and studying inside academe, I’m launching this new blog to share insights on the nonprofit cultural sector. I’m especially interested in topics around leadership, ethics, and community building.
I’ve named this blog Colere (pronounced COAL-lehr-ray) from the Latin for “culture”, meaning to cultivate or tend, as one would a field of greens or as I do every summer growing cherry tomatoes in a cedar planting trough in my side yard. I hope you’ll join me as I dig around in the cultural dirt, helping to grow healthy, just, community-engaged, well-supported, resonant, and resilient nonprofit arts organizations and museums.
